Hamas and the Quartet Principles

Since Israel’s disengagement from the Gaza Strip in 2005 over 8,000 rockets and mortars have been indiscriminately fired at Israel by Hamas and other Gaza-based terror organisations.

Hamas, despite being in government, both facilitate and perpetrate terrorist attacks against Israel, including the kidnapping of Cpl Gilad Shalit in June 2006.

Hamas’ founding charter calls for the destruction of the Jewish State; is widely regarded amongst the international community as a terrorist organisation and has repeatedly opposed peace efforts with Israel.

Rocket fire into southern Israeli population centres and cross-border terror attacks dramatically increased in 2012, which led to Israel launching Operation Pillar of Defense in November to remove the strategic threat facing Israeli civilians. Hamas and other terror groups operating under its protection fired as many as 1,500 rockets towards Israel in just one week, killing six and injuring more than 200. In a dramatic escalation, Israel’s largest cities, Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, were targeted from Gaza for the first time by Iranian-supplied long-range missiles.

Hamas’ rockets now threaten more than 4 million citizens in Israel – over half of the country’s population.

Hamas continue to reject the Quartet Principles and have publically condemned any peace negotiations between Israel and the PA. The Quartet Principles stipulate that Hamas must recognise the State of Israel, abide by previous diplomatic agreements and renounce violence.

With its ideology intact, Hamas cannot be a partner for peace and will ensure that any Middle East peace is short-lived.

CFI continue to campaign on this issue in Parliament to ensure that all Conservative MPs are well briefed on this important issue.

“Hamas need to know that they must renounce violence and they will not be allowed to dictate the way forward in the peace process. Last month, when rockets rained down on Israel, we were unequivocal about the right of Israelis to live free from attack by terrorist groups on their border”. Prime Minister David Cameron, CFI Annual Business Lunch 2012, 11 December 2012
